What made you start The Blck Shop?
Amanda: After learning about Black Wall Street – a black community with black-owned
businesses, buses and banks, I thought to myself we can build this again. In order to do
this, we need to spend our dollars on black-owned things. Whether it’s your clothes,
food, wine or detergent – we need to buy Black! So, I wanted to create a platform
where people could connect to black owned products and services.
What is the The Blck Shop about
Amanda: The Blck Shop is currently a lifestyle platform, celebrating black owned products and services. Given the fact that we’re currently in a pandemic, I decided to focus more on
self-care products and services. Eventually, we will expand to include other products
and services.
What is your goal with the The Blck Shop?
Amanda: My goal is to create a sort of “Black Bloomingdales” – a platform to find higher end items for your home, your wardrobe etc. Quality is important to me and I stand by every
product/service I’ve posted.
What are some black-owned wine or champagne companies that we should know about?
Amanda: My absolute favorite Black owned wine brand is Gaia Stone – It’s black owned AND woman owned! Asia, the owner, is super sweet and I actually worked with her for a
Black History Month event. Very professional and her wine is BOMB! I celebrated my
birthday recently with Black owned champagne from Stuyvesant Champagne – I
especially love this brand because it’s based in my hometown – Brooklyn, NY!
What do you love most about black culture?
Amanda: I love us! Everything about us. Our style. Our vernacular. That moment when you walk into a spot and you acknowledge your Black brother or sister, with a head nod or a
smile. We created culture, period.
Give us some of your favorite black nail techs
Amanda: I’m looking forward to trying out Millennial Nails in Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn. I get my apres gel sets done by a WOC, Vanessa @vanytiffnyc.
Who are the top fashion designers or clothing brands we must check out or follow?
Amanda: I recently ordered a couple of pieces from Tier NYC. I love their assorted color snapbacks
and FINALLY got my hands on one (golden yellow). As of recently, I’ve been collecting
Black-owned printed tees – I have one from Shop Crafted, Diet Starts Monday and Thirty
Nine Seven.
Are there any black owned spas that you can recommend going to and if so what was your
experience there?
Amanda: I’ve only been to one Black-owned spa, Joire Spa in Brooklyn. I had a great experience there – I got the “Glow Up” facial and spent some time in the sauna afterwards. Super relaxing and I’ll definitely be back there soon.
What are some must try black owned restaurants we should try out that are finger licking good and JUICY!
Amanda: As of recently, I’ve been prioritizing my physical wellness so that means eating lots of
salads and drinking lots of smoothies. My three favorite Black owned juice spots are:
Spread Love and Juice, Twisted Rootz & Verdure (all in Brooklyn).
